Dr Samantha McLean

Dr Samantha McLean is a transdisciplinary researcher at Nottingham Trent University with over 20 years’ experience specialising in microbiology. She has an extensive interdisciplinary academic and multi-sector industrial network where her work focusses on antimicrobial therapeutic and prototype material development for commercialisation to reduce the microbial and antimicrobial resistance burden (funded by the BBSRC, NIHR, and Innovate UK). Samantha is the academic microbiology lead for the Medical Technologies Innovation Facility, a pioneering facility that provides a bridge between academia and industry and is a member of the British Standards Institute panel (CH/216/-/3: products and biofilms).


Dr Paul Ansdell

Dr Paul Ansdell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Science at Northumbria University. His research focuses on sex differences in physiology, specifically how age, sex and hormonal status interact to determine the response to exercise and neuromuscular function. His research into topics surrounding the menopause and brain ageing is funded by organisations such as the Office for Veteran’s Affairs and the Royal Society. He is also the Theme Lead for Human, Environmental and Exercise Physiology within the Physiological Society.


Professor Bee K Tan

Professor Bee K Tan is a clinician scientist based at the University of Leicester. He is also an Honorary Consultant at University Hospitals Leicester NHS Trust and Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists accredited Subspecialist in Reproductive Medicine. He completed his fellowship in Reproductive Medicine and Surgery in Cambridge, obtained his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the Norwich Medical School and his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from the University of Warwick. Professor Tan is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (FRCOG), Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow [FRCS (Glasg)], Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland [FRCP (Ire)] and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Professor Tan has 110 manuscripts, published a monograph and contributed to three book chapters to date.

Operational Team


Raj Crossley

Raj has been a part of Nottingham Trent University for over a decade, contributing significantly to the School of Science and Technology. Raj has a Master’s degree in Human Rights and Justice from Nottingham Law School, specialising in GDPR and medical research, with an interest in research ethics. Throughout her tenure, Raj has successfully spearheaded various operational projects, including the COVID-19 Clinical Operational Team and the university Human Tissue License Application. She has also been instrumental in creating and developing several successful programmes, such as the Academic Mentoring and Research Training Programme (SMART) and the Bio-Med Research, Industry Training Enterprise (BRITE) at NTU. More recently, Raj has focused on strengthening knowledge exchange between academic colleagues and sectors such as small-medium enterprises, NHS hospitals, councils, charities, and learned societies.


Elizabeth Christian

Elizabeth (Lizzie) Christian is a Project Coordinator at Nottingham Trent University (NTU). Lizzie graduated from the University of Sheffield with a BSc in Psychology. Whilst working at NTU, Lizzie has successfully coordinated projects from inception to delivery, to ensure quality of standards and deadlines are met. Lizzie has worked closely and supported the Associate Dean for Research for the School of Science and Technology in developing strategic research partnerships internationally with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB). She has also supported the organisation of industry led event visits for NTU with Inapheas Biolabs and developed knowledge exchange activities within the School of Science and Technology.
