Supporting inter-sector collaboration to reduce the gap between health span and lifespan

By 2040, nearly one in seven people in the UK is projected to be aged over 75, many living with multiple morbidities. By contrast, there are areas across the world with lower rates of chronic disease, where people live longer healthier lives. Our Consortium will support researchers to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries and collaborate across sectors to formulate and implement viable solutions that take frontier bioscience to real world outcomes.

Three transversal themes

Our Consortium supports research related to three transversal themes:

Metabolic health

Investigating fundamental biological processes to understand cellular mechanisms and navigate which biomarkers predict and promote continued health and the molecular basis of healthy resilience, with the aim of developing interventions that will keep the population healthier for longer.

Health and ageing across the life course

Improving understanding of the maintenance of health across the whole life course to advance knowledge of the underpinning mechanisms involved in ageing, to improve population health and reduce the gap between health span and lifespan.

Transformative technologies to tackle health inequalities

Investigating developments in tools, technologies and approaches that enable researchers to push the boundaries of scientific discovery by advancing the frontiers of bioscience research and using co-design techniques to engage people who experience health inequalities.

Harnessing decades of knowledge and expertise and a strong multi-sector network, our themes support the next generation of innovators in creating and delivering transdisciplinary projects that translate fundamental research into end user benefit.
